Serving, Sharing, and Growing – Day 5
Tuesday, day five of our mission trip, has been another remarkable chapter in this journey. As a team, we are connecting deeply with one another through our service and shared experiences here in the Dominican Republic. At the same time, we are growing in our love for God and in our appreciation for the beauty of His world and His people. We are witnessing God move in incredible ways through the work we’re doing and the relationships we’re building.
The morning began with us completing the foundation of a house we started on Saturday. After finishing the work, we had the privilege of meeting the family who will soon call it home—Fermine (father), Rosita (mother), and their 6-year-old daughter Yokeiry, who has special needs. Hearing their story and witnessing their gratitude was deeply moving. It was an honor to serve and love them in this tangible way and to play a small part in their story.
Later, we divided into four groups to deliver groceries with the women’s co-op. This ministry continues to amaze us with its loving and intentional approach to serving those in need. Each group visited different households, and the experiences were incredibly powerful. One family we visited had recently lost their 5-year-old son. The sadness in their home was palpable, but we were grateful to offer comfort through prayer, scripture, and encouragement. It was a poignant reminder of the importance of meeting physical needs, walking alongside people in their grief, and pointing them to the hope of Christ.
In the afternoon, Alexi organized a basketball game with some locals, partnering with an assistant coach who regularly trains boys in basketball at Mission Emanuel. Before the game, three of our students courageously shared their testimonies. We could not be prouder of them for speaking so authentically and boldly. We pray their words will plant seeds of faith. The scrimmage that followed was full of energy and joy—a fantastic way to connect with the local community.
As always, we ended the night with our evening debrief. These times have become some of the most meaningful moments of our trip. We gather for devotions, worship, and reflections on the day. Hearing so many share their perspectives and how God is working in their hearts has been so encouraging. This experience is not only impacting the people we’re serving but is also transforming each of us in profound ways.
