Our Building Club Egg Drop Challenge

Faith Christian School’s Building Club Egg Drop Challenge: A Lesson in Creativity and Engineering

The Faith Christian Building Club, (6-8 grade) School recently participated in an engaging hands-on science project that put their creativity, problem-solving skills, and knowledge of physics to the test. Their challenge was to design a contraption capable of protecting an egg from breaking during a drop from 15 feet in the air.

Under the guidance of Mr. Dolence, the students were given a specific budget and a set list of materials to create their devices. With limited resources, they had to think outside the box, using their engineering skills to build a structure that would arrest the fall of the egg and keep it intact. The eggs were dropped from a height of 15 feet, with the drop initiated by a pulley system carefully rigged by Mr. Forrest. The students pulled a string to release their eggs, watching eagerly as their creations were tested.

In an exciting twist, Ms. Moe, the high school physics teacher at Faith Christian School, joined the experiment to observe and coach the 7th graders, offering helpful hints and encouraging them—a great way to connect and cheer on those excited about science and engineering. Adding to the excitement, Mr. Popejoy, our Head of School, joined from the sidelines to watch the students’ projects in action, celebrating their triumphant efforts and offering additional encouragement, which added an extra layer of enthusiasm to the event.

While most eggs didn’t survive the drop and ended up in a gooey mess, there was one standout—Clayton’s egg. Thanks to his well-thought-out design, Clayton’s egg survived the fall without a single crack! His successful contraption proved the value of careful planning and innovative design. Clayton created a unique structure using straws, with the straws extending outward like legs to help soften the blow of the drop. This design not only provided a cushioning effect but also distributed the force of impact evenly, protecting the egg inside. Clayton’s thoughtful approach showed the importance of trial, error, and ingenuity in engineering challenges.

This Egg Drop Challenge was more than just a fun activity; it was a valuable learning experience for our students. It allowed them to apply the concepts of physics, engineering, and teamwork, all while fostering a sense of accomplishment. At Faith Christian School, we believe in nurturing our students’ creativity and critical thinking skills, and projects like these are a perfect way to bring those lessons to life.

We’re proud of the hard work and ingenuity displayed by all our Building Club members and we look forward to seeing what they’ll create next!
